5 components of the Gonstead chiropractic system which is what Dr. Abby uses:

Visualization

I gather a lot of information of what may be going on just by observing you as a patient. This includes how you walk, stand, sit, what are your facial expressions saying,  and your overall posture. This helps correlate the other findings from the palpation and x-rays.

Instrumentation

In this technique we use a nervoscope which is a big thermometer that is ran from the base of the skull clear to your tail bone. This tells me differences in temperature on either side of the spine. Often times when there is more heat on one side versus the other it indicates there is inflammation at that level and something is not functioning as it should. This also helps narrow down the areas that need to be evaluated further and clues the doctor in for if there is a possible subluxation present.

Palpation

There are 2 types of palpation or feeling that the doctor uses during the work up of a patient.

Static palpation is when the doctor feels along the spine looking for temperature difference, edema or swelling, oily or dryness, blemishes, muscle tightness, or structural differences like curves.

Motion palpation is when the doctor moves the patient in all ranges of motion looking for the directions that the movement is restricted in. This tells the doctor how to fix the subluxation that has now been confirmed with the 3 previous components.

X-rays

Full spine x-rays are taken usually at the first visit so that the doctor can actually see what your spine looks like. This is especially important because not everyone’s spines are the same or the textbook normal. This also ensures that we are seeing the whole story, often times there are anomalies that occur that the patient has no idea that they had, including extra bones, fractures, or silent disease processes like arthritic degeneration.

Case Management

Understanding what you as a patient are feeling and experiencing is also an important component to be utilized. When the doctor knows what symptoms a patient is experiencing, it helps us look deeper into certain areas for the subluxation as each area of the spine is responsible for certain functions. However, it is important to realize that though there are these maps, not always is that area responsible for that symptom so your care is always individualized and never a cookbook or one size fits all.

Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system.

They help patients maintain optimal health while avoiding unnecessary drugs or surgery.

Fun Facts:

There are 33 total vertebrae in the spine and the first chiropractic adjustment was performed sept 18th, 1895.

Less than 10% of your nervous system perceives pain, the other 90% is responsible for allowing your body function properly; it is possible to have nerveinterference and feel perfectly healthy. How you feel is a poor judge of your health. By the time symptoms appear, many spinal problems are advanced.

Every pound we are over weight in 4 extra pounds of stress on our weight bearing joint like our spine, knee, and hips.

“Chiropractors have found in every disease that is supposed to be contagious, a cause in the spine,” wrote B.J. Palmer, the famous developer of chiropractic, in 1909. “In the spinal column, we will find a subluxation that corresponds to every type of disease.”

As chiropractic science is concerned with preserving and restoring health, it focuses particular attention on subluxations of the tiny bones of the spine. A vertebral subluxation happens when one or more of bones of the spine are out of position and compress spinal nerves. These nerves are the primary communication link between the body to the brain. Pressure on these nerves interferes with the communication between the body and the brain, which may cause organs, tissues, and cells not to function properly. Chiropractic identifies, analyzes and helps correct these disturbances to restore the body’s natural balance and the potential for self-healing.

How a Subluxation Interferes with Optimal Health

A subluxation interrupts the proper operation of the body’s nerve system, compromising the maintenance of optimal health. The human body consists of several interrelated systems, functioning with an innate intelligence to adapt to changes in our internal environment and the world around us. Every moment, impulses are delivered between the brain and the body’s 100 trillion cells to coordinate every movement and function. Impulses send this intricate information through the nerve connections in our spine. When vertebrae become subluxated because of any number of factors, interference results in the body’s communication process, negatively affecting functions and performance.
